Applying semantic technologies to
sustainability reporting

In April 2006 Fuji Xerox Australia, in partnership with Common Ground Publishing and RMIT University, began researching the emerging world of "semantic" technologies and their impact on the printing and publishing industries. This first project was co-funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government through an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grant and has resulted in the generation of a substantial body of knowledge, the development of some key capabilities and the development of a community of interest within Australia.

In order to continue this work and to ensure that it results in some "real world" applications the original partners applied for, and were awarded a second ARC Grant in May 2009. Fundamental to this was both the broadening of the project scope and the inclusion of additional partners. This second project aims to develop a "semantic" approach, underpinned by open source software and systems, to the concept of sustainability reporting within organisations.

Partner organisations

The outcome of any research is not just knowledge but relationships. The collaborative research environment being created for this project is the result of the commitment and interest of the numerous partners who are now represented and, in particular, the individuals within those organisations.

The City of Melbourne has long been working with the United Nations Global Compact Cities Programme and, as a result of this is a founding partner in this project. Fuji Xerox Australia was part of the original research project and has been working informally with both Microsoft and Angusta Systems for the past few years, a relationship now formalised through this research project, which Both Cambridge International College and Common Ground have strong relationships with RMIT University.
